The find­ings were supported by other researchers who found that coffee drinkers developed Parkinson’s disease eight years later than people who didn’t drink coffee. This hasn’t been true for Michael or me; we’re both java hounds.

Now, these studies probably don’t mean that caffeine—or some other ingredient in coffee—protects the brain from the ravages of Parkinson’s disease.

If you don’t drink coffee, it probably doesn’t make sense to brew a cup and try to pick up the habit. In addition, people who drink more than three or four cups daily often experi­ence more severe tremor, nausea, and greater problems with insom­nia. If you like to wake up to a morning cup of Java, keep things in moderation, relax, and enjoy.

Nicotine

Cigarette smoking is harmful to your health. It contributes to heart disease, stroke, hypertension, lung cancer, and other cancers and health problems.

Ironically, however, people who smoke ciga­rettes have lower rates of Parkinson’s disease than those who don’t smoke. For reasons that are not well understood, nicotine appears to protect the dopamine-producing cells in the brain.

In laboratory research, nicotine has been shown to protect the brains of rats from cell death caused by exposure to the toxin MPTP. In human studies involving the nicotine patch, participants wearing the patch showed no improvement in motor symptoms compared to people with PD who did not wear the patch. The interaction between nicotine and Parkinson’s disease remains under investigation.

I am a smoker—and I have been since before my PD was diag­nosed—but I try to justify this vice by calling it a treatment for my PD. My doctor reminds me that this doesn’t make sense; the health hazards far outweigh any possible benefits. Do as I say, not as I do: don’t smoke.

“I am a smoker,” said Marian, 60. “I could quit, but I find that my down time is more pronounced and my symptoms are more exaggerated when I don’t smoke. Even my doctor jokes that I have the only disease that smoking is good for, but I know he’s kidding. I don’t want to live with Parkinson’s only to die of lung cancer.”

Researchers have also shown, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), that meditation can acti­vate certain structures in the brain that control the autonomic ner­vous system, a system that can become dysfunctional in some PD patients.

To experience the relaxing benefits of meditation, find a quiet place where you are not apt to be interrupted. Sit in a firm chair with your back as straight as possible, or lie down flat on your back on the ground. Then try one of the three basic types of meditation.

- Mantra meditation involves repeating—either aloud or silently— a word, a syllable, or a group of words each time you breathe out. I use prayer as my mantra. I find that “when I take the time to be still and pray, it can ease many of my symptoms, even on the most horrid of days.

- Gazing meditation involves focusing both your attention and your gaze on an object such as a candle flame, a stone, or a flower. The object should be about one foot away from your face. Gaze at it rather than stare, keeping your eyes relaxed. Don’t try to think about the object in words, just look at it without judgment.

- Breathing meditation involves focusing on the rise and fall of your breath. Draw a deep breath, focusing on the inhalation, the pause before you exhale, the exhalation, and the pause be­fore you inhale. Each time you complete a breath and exhale, count 1 through 4, then start over with 1 when you exhale. The counting helps clear your mind of other thoughts.

No matter which type of meditation you choose, begin your ses­sion with a few minutes of deep breathing. When random thoughts enter your mind during your meditation time (as they almost cer­tainly will), don’t become anxious; just accept the thoughts and let them pass through your mind without notice or response. Start by meditating for 5 to 10 minutes once or twice a day, then work up to 15 to 20 minutes.

This is another option to remove waste from your body and like the first, there are three options that you can choose from. Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), Continuous Cycle-assisted Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD) or a mixture of both.

If you opt for CAPD you are able to do this on your own, which means less stress on your family and you do not need a machine. There is no need to travel to a center and it can be done wherever you need, so you can keep your normal working pattern.

If you are opting for CCPD, you are able to do this at night rather than disrupt your daily life.

The Disadvantages of Peritoneal Dialysis for Kidney Disease

CAPD can cause a disruption to your daily life since you will need to do this during the day and it must be done seven days a week. The CCPD needs a machine, which can cause problems when going away, and your nightly movement will be limited due to being connected to a machine.

Kidney Transplant to Cure Kidney Disease

It is important to note that dialysis is not a cure for your disease; it is just a way to help you cope with the buildup of waste in your system. The only cure is to opt for a kidney transplant. This is when a healthy kidney is put in place of your current damaged ones but it does require major surgery under general anesthetic, which some people are not suitable for. You will not need dialysis once you have had the transplant but you could be waiting years for a donor kidney and then your body may reject it.

Up to now, it is not clear why some women may develop gestational diabetes while others do not. However, it has been found out that there are some women who are at risk more than others are.

The women who have high chances of developing gestational diabetes. Women who have the history of gestational diabetes in the family, for example if a sister, a mother or a grandmother developed it during pregnancy.

If the woman has given birth to overweight child in the past. If the woman herself is obese or overweight. If she suffers from PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).

The area where people originated also has been found to contribute to the risk of a woman in developing the diabetes. The women who are at risk are the women from South Asia, middle east and black Caribbean women.

When the tests should be conducted

Gestational diabetes is identified by using glucose tolerance test, taken during the morning before the woman takes anything. The doctors give the woman glucose solution and they will monitor how the body deals with glucose on intervals.

If you have chances of developing gestational pregnancy, you will be tested during the 24^th and 28^th week. If you have developed gestational diabetes in your past pregnancy, you will be tested on the 18^th week.

If the first test is normal, you will be tested again on the 24^th week. If you are found with gestational diabetes, you will be referred to doctors and nurses who have experience of taking care of women who are suffering from gestational diabetes.

Measures to prevent gestational diabetes

If you are pregnant there are simple things that you can do which can reduce your risks of developing  gestational diabetes. If you watch what you eat and you do exercise regularly, you will be lowering the problem of diabetes. If you do not know what to eat, you can visit a dietitian or a doctor to give you some advice.

You have to make sure that you eat much of whole meal bread, brown rice, pasta, beans lentils, and oats. These foods are also recommended if you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes because they are low glycemic food and they help in balancing sugar levels.

The diet also has to include oil fishy, much of fruits and vegetables. If you are craving for chocolate or crisps, you have to go for those that have low level in salt, sugar and fat. Besides of good diet, you have also to exercise regularly such as walking or  bicycling for 30 minutes each day.

Management of gestational blood sugar

If you are suffering from gestational blood sugar, you will have to test yourself each day to see if the levels are lowering. If you are not able to go to see the doctors every day, you will be shown on how to do it.

Managing gestational diabetes by taking medicines

If exercising and dieting cannot lower your glucose level, then you will be given insulin tablets or injections. You can be asked to take the medicines regularly or only if there is a need to take them. The doctor will be able to give you all required information.

The treatment depends on the stage of infection and also the size of the tumor. The tumor can for instance be removed through surgery but in the circumstance that the removal fails, it is fatal as it results to death within six months.

This however can be caused by medics lacking necessary expertise to deal with the tumor and also facilities.

The Causes of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

There are a number of causes of this condition and these includes; alcoholism, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, aflotoxins, cirrhosis of the liver, hemachromatosis and type diabetes. When hepatocellular adenomas grow to size 6-8cm, they become cancerous and consequently becomes risk to hepatocellular carcinoma. This condition however, mostly affects the adults.

Symptoms of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

The symptoms of this condition include jaundice- yellowish pigmentation of the skin, bloating of ascites, easy bruising from blood clotting abnormalities, loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss, abdominal pains, and nausea- feeling of dizziness, emesis and fatigue.

Hepatocellular carcinoma majorly develops when there is mutation to the cellular machinery and this makes the cells to replicate at a higher rate and consequently resulting in the cell apoptosis which consider the role of hepatitis B in advancing the spread of cancerous cells.

We find that it plays a very big role in the acute cases so far. Chronic infection of hepatitis B or C aids in the development of this condition and this is done repeatedly causing the body’s immune system to attack the liver cells, some of which are affected.

It worsens when mistakes are made leading to carcinogenic. This condition can be treated by radio therapy, systematic chemotherapy and topical chemotherapy.

The Review of Adenocarcinoma

There is also adenocarcinoma which is basically the cancer of an epithelium; it majorly originates from the glandular tissue. The study of the cells of glandular can help us to determine whether the tumor is an adenocarcinoma or even some other form of cancer, and therefore the major distinctive feature here is the glandular tissue whether or not they are infected.

There are other forms of adenocarcinoma for instance we have; adenocarcinoma of the lungs, adenocarcinoma of the colon and adenocarcinoma of the ovary. In each case it has been scientifically established that their modes of diagnosis is also different, for example in some cases of the adenocarcinoma, a preliminary diagnosis is carried out by a pathologist.

This is the most difficult form of cancer in terms of diagnosis and also treatment. Though almost all forms of cancer are treated by radiation but in this case there is no clear indication of the line of treatment.

In most cases it is advisable that the medical practitioner uses the originating tissue to determine the mode of diagnosis. It can also arise from the many tissues in the body due to ambiguous nature of the glands within the body. These conditions are hard to tell since all need specialized attention to tell them apart.

The problem be­comes worse when the number of free radicals is further increased by the toxic burden of household chemicals, pesticides, and other toxic exposures.

Antioxidants—whether consumed as food or nutritional supple­ments—can help the body fight free-radical damage and stabilize the reactive oxygen molecules by freely donating extra electrons. Anti­oxidants include vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium, among others.

Vitamin C

One-fourth of all Americans do not get even the minimum amount of vitamin C—60 milligrams—that cells need to perform basic biological functions. In the body, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) helps with tissue and collagen growth, wound healing, adrenal gland function, and healthy gums, in addition to serving as a pow­erful antioxidant.

Studies have found plasma levels of vitamin C to be significantly lower in people with Parkinson’s disease, compared to healthy controls.

Dosage: Take 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily in divided dos­es (half in the morning, half at night), or follow package directions.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps improve circulation, promotes healthy blood clotting, lowers blood pressure, helps prevent cataracts, and repairs damaged tissue. It may also play a role in preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease. Studies have found the risk of PD signifi­cantly reduced among men and women who consumed moderate levels of vitamin E from food, rather than supplements.

PD patients who have high blood pressure or who are on an anti­coagulant (blood thinner) such as Coumadin (warfarin) should not take vitamin E supplements without a doctor’s approval.

Dosage: Take 400IU of vitamin E daily, or follow package direc­tions.

Selenium

Selenium is a powerful antioxidant, especially when combined with vitamin E. In the body, this trace element helps form the anti­oxidant selenium-glutathione peroxidase. It is also needed for pan­creatic function, tissue elasticity, and red blood cell metabolism.

Studies have shown that people with chronic illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease may have low levels of selenium. For best re­sults, take selenomethionine, rather than sodium selenite or sodium selenate.

Dosage: Take 100 micrograms of selenium daily, or follow prod­uct directions.

However, at times these balloons can fill and it often leads to discomfort and headaches. This is not always due to an infection and can also be due to hay fever, allergic reactions or just simply changes to airborne substances.

Use Steam to Help Your Sinuses

The best way to battle your congested sinuses is through the use of steam, especially steam with a mixture of menthol. You can fill a bowl with some hot water and sit over it, commonly with a towel over your head.

You can breathe normally and it will help the sinuses become decongested in a matter of minutes. You can also do this in a hot shower or bath. You bath is the perfect place to be able to unwind at the same time.

If you have a warm cloth, you can place that over your sinuses to offer some relief. You should never blow your nose too hard because it can lead to other problems within your sinuses and often cause your nose to start bleeding.

Look for Sinus Irrigation Kits

There are a number of irrigation kits that can be used to help with decongestant your sinuses or you can make your own. When buying a kit, you should always follow all the instructions so that you are successful. You should always do this gently so that you do not cause yourself any pain or discomfort.

Try Home Remedies or Nasal Sprays

There are a number of home remedies that you can buy from your local health store. The best one that has been used for decades is the Neti Pot. This looks like a small tea pot and you should, again, follow all the instructions carefully. You can also buy over the counter nasal sprays to help with discomfort but they are very addictive so you should not use them over a long period of time.

See Your Doctor

No matter what method you try to help clear your sinuses, you should also talk to your doctor. This is extremely important so that you can ensure that your sinus congestion is not due to an infection. If you notice that the discharge from your nose is not white then this is a clear sign that it is an infection. Talking to your doctor will give you a clear indication of how serious it is and whether there is any medication that you can take to help you.

Wash Your Hands

When you go through the irrigation techniques, you should always wash your hands both before and after doing it. It does not matter whether you are using a home remedy or whether you are using a manufactured one. Washing your hands will help prevent contamination and any extra infections that you may pick up while your body is already weak.

Kidney Transplant to Cure Kidney Disease

A surgeon will place a new kidney inside your abdomen and then connect the arteries and veins. There is no need to remove your damaged kidneys and the blood flow will be redirected into the new kidney to help your body work normally again.

It can take up to a few weeks for the kidney to work properly, but this is perfectly normal. The only time that your own kidneys will be removed is if they have caused an infection or you have high blood pressure because of them.

Preparing for a Kidney Transplant

There are many steps before you can receive a transplant and the process is not for everybody. You need to seriously talk with your doctor about your options.

You can sometimes gain a transplant from a friend or family member, since people can live with only one kidney. There are a number of factor that need to match to be able to use a kidney and if none of your prospective donors match, you will be placed on a waiting list.

The factors that need to match are your blood type, which is the most important of all three, your human leukocyte antigens and cross-matching antigens.

The first set of antigens do not need to be a complete match, as long as your blood types are. The second set of antigens are tested through a small blood sample. If there is no reaction then the antigens are a good match.

Timing for Kidney Transplants

If you have been given a kidney by a volunteer then your surgery can be planned as soon as possible.

However, it can take several years to find a matching donor if you are on the list since there are just not enough deceased donors as there are people who need the transplant.

The surgery itself takes around three or four hours and you will need to stay in the hospital afterwards for about a week. After that, you will need regular checkups.

Complications with Transplant Curing Kidney Disease

No matter how much the match between you and the donor are, there are still possibilities that you will reject the new kidney. This is usually due to not taking your medication as you were supposed to. This medication is meant to help stop your immune system from seeing the new kidney as a threat and start attacking it.

These medications will need to be taken the whole time that you have the new kidney and it is functioning. When this happens, you will need to go back on dialysis.

You are more likely not to reject the kidney if it has come from a living relative because both of your make-ups are very similar. Also, around 85 percent of transplants from donors who are deceased still work a year after the surgery.

Kidney Transplant Diet

Your diet will not be as strict as it is when on dialysis but you will still need to cut back on some food and ensure that others are eaten more. Higher protein food is still the best for you, which you can get in meats, chicken and fish.

You will need to take medication, which means that you may need to start counting your calories since the medication will cause weight gain. You may also need to cut down on the amount of salt that you easy because the medication could also cause high blood pressure, which salt intake can control.

The women who give birth to the babies who are overweight and the women who have history of diabetes in their family. Ethical factors also can contribute to the woman tolerance of diabetes or can increase their chances of suffering  gestational diabetes.

Besides of the above risks, women who smoke or who suffered polycystic ovarian increase their risks of suffering gestational diabetes.

Since at least 40 to 60 percent women do not have any risk factor, the health care may choose to screen all pregnant women. Another reason of screening all women is that sometime women do not have any symptoms that means and they may not be aware that they are suffering gestational diabetes.

The common symptoms that women show when they suffer gestational pregnancy are: the thirst, and urination increases, the woman may feel fatigue, vomiting, and nausea, the yeast infection and bladder infection can also increase. Sometime the woman may suffer a blurred vision.

The reasons for gestational diabetes are yet to be known

The reasons behind developing gestational diabetes are yet to be known. It is only believed that some pregnancy hormones can interfere with insulin action and increase the insulin resistance.

If there is insulin resistance, it also means that the glucose will not enter the blood system properly and it will be increased in the blood system.

Even if it is not yet clear why some people can increase the glucose in their blood than others, however it has been found out that gene mutation or obesity and other reasons that lead the type 2 diabetes.

The effects of gestational diabetes on the unborn baby

The gestational diabetes can also expose the child on a high level of glucose since the glucose pass through the placenta barrier. Since the insulin itself cannot cross placenta, the baby cannot find enough insulin to fight off the glucose increasing the risk of abnormal growth and large body.

After the birth, the high level of glucose around the baby disappears, but because the body mechanism has already developed much insulin to fight off the glucose, the child may suffer low level of glucose in his body.

Tests used to detect gestational diabetes

There is no single test that can detect the high level of glucose in serum or in plasma. A screen test is followed up by diagnostic test. After screen testing, there should be also diagnostic testing. An advance test can be conducted to women who are at risk when they visit the hospital for antenatal care.

The woman can be tested using fasting glucose test, postprandial test and random glucose level test. People have different opinions about the test that are used for screening and for diagnosing. This because population risks factors differ and the cost effectiveness of the tests.

Some doctors may wait until the woman reach 24 weeks, however if the woman is at risk the test may be taken earlier. The tests are no challenge blood level glucose tests, screening glucose level challenge test and oral glucose tolerance.

Symptoms of Inflammatory Cancer

The notable signs of this condition include rapid swelling sometimes associated by skin changes and nipple retraction, rapid increase in breast size, reddening, persistent itching, and skin hot to touch.

Other symptoms include; pain in breast, skin changes, sudden swelling of breast, itching of the breast, swelling of limp nodes under the arm or in the neck, unusual warmth of the affected breast, breast is harder or firmer, some other symptoms though not necessarily experienced in all cases may include; swelling of the arm, breast decreasing instead of increasing and also a lump may grow rapidly.

Inflammatory breast cancer shows low levels of estrogen and progesterone. The most reliable diagnosis includes biopsy, mammography or ultrasound. This condition is also known to respond to antibiotics, progesterone and reaction to other medication and even hormones.

Infection Stages of Inflammatory Cancer

The diagnosis of this type of cancer depends on the stage of infection. There are three stages of infection these include; firstly, stage IIIA -which indicates that only one breast is affected, secondly, stage IIIB – this shows that the whole breast is affected, in addition it also gives an indicator that spread is taking place and that the cancer might be spreading to areas like the chest wall, skin and even the chest muscle.

Finally, there is stage IV – this indicates that the spread of the cancerous cells has taken root to other organs these organs include; bones, lungs, liver, brain and lymph nodes.

In the treatment various methods are used these include multi-nudal therapy which includes chemotherapy with a combination of radiation therapy, hormonal therapy where necessary. Also it is good to note that surgery may be required.

Cure of Inflammatory Cancer

Estrogen antagonist inhibition improves outcome of ER positive cancer. It is also good to note that surgery is only and rarely performed because of inflammatory breast cancer is considered a systematic cancer. This condition is normally characterized by the presence of cancer cells in the sub dermal lymphatic or in the skin biopsy.

Inflammatory  breast cancer is a very common condition in young women and does require due attention  to cure it, this is necessary as if assumed  it can lead to one or a woman losing one or both breasts which has very consequential implications mostly in relation to child birth or motherhood.

There are complications that do arise from treatment of this kind of cancer, these complications include swelling of the arm this happens after surgery , also on surgery; reconstruction of breast may be an option for healthy women after undergoing mastectomy. Consequently for patients who smoke or even suffer from a diabetic condition do suffer from some resultant complications.

At that point in her life, Doris felt she had nothing to lose by changing her lifestyle:

I ate food rich in the amino acid GABA (gamma-amino-butyric acid) and I took a slew of supplements—B vitamins, GABA, alpha-lipoic acid, and lots of others. I took the supple­ments for about three months, but I saw results very quickly.

Within a few weeks, I almost felt normal. As I got better, I was able to exercise again. When I started, I couldn’t swing my arms when I walked, if I could walk at all.

When my mo­tor skills came back to me, I started walking, biking, playing racquetball, and working out with weights at the gym. I got my health back.

I remember sitting in my support group and seeing the other people who were struggling, and I felt completely nor­mal. It’s obvious that for me nutrition is very important. The better I followed the program, the better I felt. I’ve proven that for myself.

I stayed with it for about a year, but I reached the point that I felt so normal that I got away from my good habits. I got a little cocky, I think. I felt so good that I thought I could eat some key lime pie here, some pizza there.

Before long I was eating the same non-nutritious foods I had been, and I gave up on the supplements. It doesn’t make any sense that I went off the program when I started to feel good, but that’s what hap­pened—and then my Parkinson’s came back.

I went back on the diet and supplements and I felt better within two weeks. I think I’ve learned my lesson—/ hope I’ve learned my lesson.

While I haven’t had the disease-transforming experience that Doris had, I do believe nutritional supplements and diet can strengthen the body and minimize Parkinson’s symptoms. I take a handful of supplements every day, but frankly, I cannot afford to pay for a wide range of over-the-counter products as well as our prescription medications. (Some supplements are available by pre­scription—and covered by insurance—but the cost of the vast ma­jority will not be reimbursed.)

In my experience, most doctors dismiss nutrition and supple­ments as unimportant. I believe that each of us should do all we can to confront our Parkinson’s with every tool we have. If adding certain foods to our diets or nutrients to our list of daily vitamins helps control our PD, we should definitely be open to trying it. Clearly, there are serious limitations to the prescription medications available for PD; if natural therapies work, I completely support their use.

One word of caution: be sure to tell your doctor about any sup­plements you take or special changes you make to your diet. At least 40 percent of PD patients use some alternative therapies—in­cluding vitamins, herbs, massage, and acupuncture—but more than half do not tell their physicians about these treatments. In some cases, there can be drug interactions or side effects from non-prescription medications.

The neurosurgeon can fix this problem in one of two basic ways: by electrically stimulating the circuit (DBS) or by rewiring the circuit using a technique known as lesion (cutting a small hole in the brain, creating what can be thought of as a minor stroke).

Both types of surgery have been found to improve motor function in people with advanced PD or in those who no longer respond well to medication.

In the late 1990s, deep brain stimulation revolutionized the surgical treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The surgery involves inserting a thin wire and electrodes into the brain, linking the wire to a re¬mote battery, and stimulating the brain at a high frequency (100 to 180 hertz).

The electrodes are positioned in the brain; the wires run under the skin along the skull and down the neck, eventually cross¬ing over to a pacemaker-sized battery pack in the chest wall. All of the wires remain under the skin. The device can be programmed by holding a computer over the skin near the pulse generator. The pro¬cedure was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease in 1997.

DBS will not reverse all symptoms. Rather, DBS is said to “turn back the clock” by five to seven years. In other words, it does not eliminate all Parkinson’s symptoms, but rather it tends to improve symptoms to the level they were a half decade before. It’s not a perfect fix, but it is a significant improvement for most people.

“The surgery didn’t help with my speech or swallowing problems,” said Jeremy, 31. “I still need extra water when I take my pills, and there are times I still have trouble with the words I need to find. But I’m much better, and it has reduced my medication by 60 percent.”

The physical changes associated with DBS are determined by the positioning of the electrodes.

- DBS of the subthalamic nucleus offers about an 80 percent reduction in tremor, as well as a 65 percent reduction in rigidity, a 51 percent reduction in bradykinesia, and an 80 to 90 percent reduction in dyskinesia. It can be done on one or both sides of the brain. After the surgery, many patients can reduce their daily dose of Parkinson’s medications by 30 to 50 percent.

- DBS of the thalamus reduces tremor in about 92 percent of Parkinson’s patients. Unfortunately, this type of DBS does not significantly improve rigidity and bradykinesia, making it an effective treatment only in people with tremor-predominant PD.

At this point there isn’t enough long-term data to know how lasting the benefits of this surgery may be, but many people who have had DBS continue to experience benefits more than 10 years later. Remember, Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease; your condition will continue to deteriorate even if you have surgery.

In most cases, DBS is performed when the patient is awake. Typically, a person does not take medication for at least a day before surgery, so that the doctors can accurately determine how the exact placement of the probes affects movement.
The mortality rate for DBS is extremely low; there has been only one reported death in North America associated with the procedure.

Approximately 4 percent of patients experience non-life-threatening infections. About 2 percent of patients experience serious permanent side effects, including difficulty opening eyelids, weakness, and numbness; additional temporary complications include seizures, confusion, infection, facial numbness, and dyskinesia.

In addition, the system requires maintenance; the electrodes must be programmed and tested on a regular basis, and the battery pack inserted under the skin in the chest wall must be changed every two to five years.

In some cases, the surgery must be repeated because the electrodes need to be repositioned or replaced. That’s what happened to Kellie.

“The doctors don’t know why, but my electrodes moved a bit,” Kellie said. “I needed to have another surgery; my husband calls it a warranty job.” At this point, Kellie reports that her left hand is twisted and she can’t bend her fingers. Sometimes she feels her left side pulling and her toes curling under. “It’s a glitch,” she said, “the doctors will take care of it.”

In early October 2006 Kellie’s surgeons repositioned the two leads that had fallen out of position. In addition, they added two more leads in Kellie’s brain. Having four leads will enhance the doc¬tors’ ability to fine-tune the frequencies in Kellie’s system.

Michael and I visited Kellie a few weeks after the second surgery. She was a different person than we had seen before; she was smil¬ing from ear to ear, active, and vibrant. She had no tremors and few signs of the debilitating dystonia that had plagued her before her DBS surgery. I watched with tears of joy when she picked up 2-year-old Noah and gave him a big bear hug.

Based on such anecdotes, it is my impression that the quality of DBS is much better than it used to be. I knew some people who had DBS as little as five years ago who spoke in a monotone after the surgery. They were often depressed and moved in a zombie-like fashion.

I think the procedure has been improved; I don’t see those symptoms anymore in patients who have undergone DBS surgery recently. Kellie had no trouble talking; in fact, her voice was more animated than it had been before surgery. Her movements were fluid and her energy level was incredible.

Most of the people I know who have had the surgery have had good results; in some cases, you wouldn’t know they had Parkinson’s at all.

We are beginning the journey toward DBS for Michael. Michael has had PD for 11 years now, and he’s at a point where his on time is short-lived and his off time grows more frequent. For several months we have been preparing ourselves and our families for this exciting procedure. After spending time with Kellie, Michael has become convinced that DBS surgery is the right next step for him.
