Choosing a treatment for your kidney disease can be very difficult. Even if you have opted for a kidney transplant, you will still need to go through months, and possibly years, of dialysis. There are two types of dialysis, depending on what you want to opt for but this will cover Hemodialysis.

Hemodialysis for Kidney Disease

The dialysis cleans the blood by using a machine. This clears the wastes and excess fluids that are in the blood. This is also able to help blood pressure control and help with the balance of potassium, sodium and calcium.

This is only a temporary measure to help replace the function that your kidneys usually do but medication and a change in your diet is extremely important.

Before Treatment for Kidney Disease can Begin

You will need to have some type of access created to your bloodstream and often includes an overnight stay at a hospital. This is created so that the blood is able to be carried through the bloodstream and out of the body and the solution is put back again without discomfort. This can be done in one of two ways, either a surgeon creates a fistula with your blood vessels or a graft is connected by a synthetic tubing.

Types of Hemodialysis for Kidney Disease

There are two ways that this process can be done. The most common is through the use of dialysis centers, which are full of technicians and nurses.

If you are on Medicare, it will pay for three of these treatments each week and you will be given fixed times three days per week; either Monday, Wednesday and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

It is possible to be put on a waiting list for certain time slots and you are able to switch with somebody if you have an event coming up. Some centers are able to offer dialysis at night, which is perfect for those with children, but the treatment lasts longer. These longer treatments, however, do means that your diet and fluid intake does not need to change as much.

However, it is possible to do your treatment at home and it usually means more frequent treatments, usually five days a week. You are able to set the schedule so it gives you more time for your daily life. You will usually need a partner, who is also trained on using the machine, and it can cause stress on your family as it can take a few weeks to actually learn how to do the treatment. There is a 24 hour support line to a dialysis center if you need it.

Complications with Kidney Disease Treatment

Like anything medical, hemodialysis is not without its complications. The most common is the infection of the incisions for your graft or fistula or a poor blood flow or clotting. These can all prevent treatment from working and will require surgery to help fix. You may also suffer from muscle cramps and a drop in your blood pressure, due to the changes in your water and chemicals in your body. It can take time to adjust to the treatment but most of these side effects are minor and can be treated very quickly.

Your Kidney Disease Diet

When receiving treatment, you will need to reduce the amount of water that you drink since that is what usually builds up in the body. You will also need to eat a well-balanced diet, which includes a lot of protein. You should watch your intake of potassium as it is very dangerous for your heart if you have too much. Your doctor may give you medication to help you with your treatment.

Sinus headaches can be one of the most annoying types of headaches and sometimes very difficult to get rid of. The headache happens due to an inflammation of your sinuses and you need to reduce this to be able to treat the headache effectively.

Follow Your Usual Headache Regime

If you often suffer from headaches, you will already have a common regime that you follow. This is usually aspirin and ibuprofen.

While it is safe for you to take both types of pain killers, since ibuprofen does not contain paracetamol, it is important to check your dosage and read all labels before you start taking the tablets.

Also, anybody under the age of 18 should not take aspirin. You can also use a warm compresses to help relieve the pressure on your sinuses.

Talk to Your Doctor

When it comes to sinus problems, it could actually be an infection. You should always check the color of the mucus that is coming from your nose.

White is good but if you have a yellow, brown or green color then you should talk to your doctor as it is a sign of infection. To help with the draining of your sinuses, try to sleep slightly upright. This is very simple to do, by placing an extra pillow underneath you.

You should also talk to your doctor if you find that you are suffering from any other symptoms such as a fever or chills. Also, if you are suffering from a constant ringing in your ears, you should also talk to them.

Nasal Sprays can Help with Decongesting

To help with the constant feeling of a blocked nose, you could consider using nasal sprays. You can buy these over the counter at many pharmacies and they can help to offer some type of relief while you are congested. However, you should not use these for a long period of time because they can become very easily addictive.

Eat Properly and Take Vitamins

Your body is struggling to fight against the infection so you should ensure that you help it as much as you can by eating healthily. Also try to get as much Vitamin C as you can since your body cannot produce this and it is essential for your immune system to work. You will also need to sleep as much as possible since this is the only time that your immune system is able to work. You will find that your headaches easy if you take a few naps during the day.

Hot Baths can Help

Headaches are stronger when you are stressed so you should take hot baths while you are congested. This is the best way to unwind and the hot steam will help your sinuses become unblocked.

Ensure that you drink plenty of water while you do this, so you do not cause yourself a dehydrated headache too. In fact, you should drink water all the time so that you help your body to fight off the infection.

Most people that actually have kidney disease will not realize that they do until it is too late. This is because the symptoms in the early stages are very small and often able to mask themselves are other, non-serious ailments.

It is possible to live your whole life, even though you have kidney disease, although many people go on to find that they have kidney failure. If caught early enough, kidney disease is reversible so it is important to know the signs and symptoms of the illness.

The Color of Urine with Kidney Disease

The kidneys control the amount that you urinate so when the kidneys are infected, the urine is the first place to check. More often than not, there will be blood in the urine.

Other symptoms include the struggle to be able to pass water or pain while passing water. Or you could find that you have the exact opposite, which is frequent urination, especially during the night, and with a bubbly and frothy look.

Feeling of Fatigue with Kidney Disease

The kidneys are partially responsible for helping your body make more red blood cells due to a hormone that they produce – erythropoietin. Without this hormone, your body does not realize that more red blood cells are needed and you end up feeling tired.

This condition, where the red blood cell count is low, is anemia. It can commonly be mistaken that the feeling of being drained is due to the anemia and not that it has been caused by something else.

Constant Itching with Kidney Disease

The kidneys are also responsible for removing waste from the body but when the kidneys start to fail, the waste builds up, especially in the blood. Since the blood runs so close to the skin, the buildup of waste starts to make the skin itch a lot. Over time, this can lead to a break out of a rash.

Again, the rash and itching is thought of as being caused by problems such as a change in detergents or an allergic reaction at first, rather than a problem with the kidneys.

Shortness of Breath with Kidney Disease

This problem is linked to two reasons. First of all, because your kidneys are no longer flushing out the waste, it often leads to extra fluid building up in the lungs.

Secondly, the lack of red blood cells in the body, which leads to anemia, means that there is not enough oxygen being carried around the body. You body needs oxygen to function and it often leads to people feel like they are short of breath after just a few hundred meters.

Dizziness with Kidney Disease

Again, this is linked to the anemia. Due to not enough oxygen being carried around the body, the brain struggles to get what it needs. This often leads to the feeling of being light-headed and dizzy. On a more serious note, it also leads to memory loss, especially the short term memory, and a trouble concentrating at times.

There are some people who are more prone to the congestion than others and it can be due to allergies or formations in the nasal area. Others will get them occasionally due to infections or changes to the seasons.

There are a few symptoms that can accompany sinus congestion but not all will. Headaches are the most common due to the feeling of pressure around the head, eyes and nose.

It is also possible to feel the congestion in the ear too since the nose, ear and throat are all connected. Another common symptom is feeling like you head is heavy.

What Are Sinuses?

It can be very common to hear the term sinus congestion but it is very difficult to know exactly what that is. Your sinuses are structures in your head that are shaped like balloons. They are usually empty and help to support the structure of your head and face but they can become full of mucus or inflamed. This can sometimes be foreign substances or even dander or a combination of all three.

Avoid Sinus Congestion

You can actually avoid this from happening by blowing your nose regularly. This should be done gently so that you do not cause yourself any discomfort or bleeding. You should always wash your hands before and after so that you can prevent infections from occurring. You can also help your body prevent infections by eating healthily, exercising and getting enough sleep so that your immune system can fight the viruses off.

Help Your Allergies

If you do suffer from allergies, then you should take your antihistamine tablets. For those that do not suffer from allergies, there are decongestant tablets that your doctor can prescribe to you. This will help your sinuses to open so that the fluid can drain. Nasal sprays are very useful but they can cause your passageways to become dependent on them so you should limit and watch your usage.

If you have been prescribed something then you should ensure that you take the whole amount. If you have antibiotics due to an infection then you should never have any left over at the end. If you stop taking the tablets because you feel better, you will find that the bacteria is still there and you will become congested again.

Drink The Recommended Amount Of Water

You should keep drinking the recommended daily amount of water, which is 8 glasses. However, when you are struggling with nasal congestion, you should drink more. This helps to dilute the mucus and clear it. You should avoid any dairy products but can drink squashes and sports drinks so that you have a taste to the water.

Hot drinks also help so you could consider teas or hot squashes. While you are drinking these you will usually find that you breath in the steam, which helps with decongesting your sinuses. Hot bowls of soup will also do the same and keep you eating while you are ill.

Choosing a treatment for your kidney disease can be very difficult. Even if you have opted for a kidney transplant, you will still need to go through months, and possibly years, of dialysis. There are two types of dialysis, depending on what you want to opt for but this will cover Peritoneal Dialysis.

Peritoneal Dialysis for Kidney Disease

This is a procedure that helps to remove the waste and extra fluids that have built up in your body due to you kidneys no longer functioning correctly. You use the abdomen lining so that you can filter your blood, acting as a temporary kidney. This is only a temporary form of treatment and cannot be used as a cure.

How Peritoneal Dialysis Treats Kidney Disease

The dialysis is a mixture of sugars and minerals that are dissolved in water. This is used to pull the waste and excess fluid into your abdomen lining, which is where the solution stays.

The solution is the drained from your body and back through the tube and takes the waste with it. This is done over several hours. The process then works again, depending on your doctor’s orders.

You need to have a catheter placed into your abdomen first for the dialysis to work. This is usually done up to three weeks prior to starting treatment and has to be done by a surgeon. The wound needs to heal properly for the dialysis to work as it should. This catheter remains in the body until dialysis is not longer needed.

Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis for Kidney Disease

There are two types of peritoneal dialysis and the first is CAPD. This can be done anywhere that is clean and well-lit since there is no need for a machine. The waste passes from a plastic bag and it stays in your body for a few hours. This process works while you are continuing with your daily life until it is time to drain the solution.

Again, this is done with a plastic bag, which the solution is passed into. You are able to then repeat the process again. This is usually done around four times a day and you do not need to wake up at night as the solution can stay in your body for six hours or more.

Continuous Cycler-Assisted Peritoneal Dialysis for Kidney Disease

Rather than being able to do this wherever you want, this is done at a machine, which empties and fills your abdomen with the same solution. This is all done while you are sleep, usually around five times, and then during the day you have the same clean solution in your abdomen; it works the whole day. Some patients do an exchange of the fluids during the middle of the day but it is not necessary.

For those that weight over 175 pounds, it is possible to combine the two treatments. This can either be done with the normal CAPD procedure with a mini cycler for CCPD at night or with the normal CCPD procedure with a single exchange during the day.

Complications of Peritoneal Dialysis for Kidney Disease

The main problem that this treatment causes is the abdominal infection. This is usually due to the incision, where the catheter was placed, becoming infected.

There are antibiotic treatments available and there is also a possibility of having the catheter in the chest, which is less at risk of infections.

It can be avoided easily by sticking to the procedure correctly and knowing the early signs so that you can be treated as soon as possible.

Diabetes is called gestational only if it is during pregnancy

Gestational diabetes is the diabetes that is identified only when the woman is pregnant. The diabetes will be said to be gestational if there was no prior symptoms of diabetes before the pregnancy and the symptoms disappears as soon as the baby is born.

However in some cases the women may be suffering from diabetes which was not yet diagnosed, or she may be prone to suffering diabetes and the pregnancy can trigger the factors of developing diabetes when the woman becomes pregnant.

This is why the women have to be put on the check up after the baby is born to identify if it was gestational diabetes or any other type of diabetes.

Taking care of an a gestational diabetes patient

If the gestational diabetes cannot be controlled by the diet, then there also a risk of the woman to fall in under hypoglycemia when she takes the insulin. If a woman is on insulin, the symptom that may show that she is falling in hypoglycemia is hunger, paleness, shaking or sweating.

As the woman is being taught about how to take the insulin, she should also learn on how to recognize the symptoms of hypoglycemia. If you are taking insulin, you have also to keep sugary drink around you.

You have to let your friends and relatives to know about your gestational diabetes and what to do when you fall in hypoglycemia since you may become unconscious when it happens.

After the baby is born, your blood sugar and that of the baby will be monitored to make sure that they become normal. It is advised to breastfeed the child before 30 minutes after giving birth to him to balance his blood sugar level.

If you were on medication, you will have to quit them after giving birth and you should be kept on check up until it is clear that it was real gestational diabetes not any other type of diabetes.

Since many people who develop gestational diabetes may develop type 2 diabetes later in life. They have to live a healthy lifestyle like a balanced diet, regular exercising and maintaining a good weight for the height. The following are tests done to identify if the woman is suffering gestational diabetes.

Non challenge blood glucose tests

When the glucose level is high after sometime of fasting or in any other occasion and it is confirmed for different occasions then a gestational diabetes is diagnosed. These tests are normally conducted on the first visit, however even if they are cheap they are not sensitive enough.

Screen glucose challenge test

Here a woman is given glucose and after sometime, it is assessed on how the body tolerated it on interval times. It is then assessed if the woman is suffering from gestational diabetes.

Sometime it may be necessary for every woman to pass through this test to identify who are suffering or who are not suffering. However, some doctors are against this, since they say that they are subjecting some women to this taste unnecessarily.

Oral glucose tolerance test

It is the test done in the morning and the woman is subjected to diet and limited physical activity, and she should not smoke during the time of testing.

Shiatsu is a natural way to help with unblocking your sinuses. It can help to open the blocked passages so that pain and discomfort can be relieved. It is not difficult to do but is not useful if the blocked sinuses are due to an infection; this is for sinusitis.

Unblock Your Sinus Passageways

First of all, you should use the pads on your index fingers so that you can press underneath the body ridge of eyes. This will be inside your eyebrows.

Doing this will help to ease the pain that you will commonly think of as a headache and will also help to ease the fatigue that you will be experiencing due to the pressure in your sinuses.

You can also relieve the pressure in your sinuses by applying some pressure onto the back of your hand – the fleshy bit between your index finger and your thumb. You will need to do this for around two minutes so that you are able to help release the congestion that will be forming in your sinuses. You should not do this if you are pregnant as it can cause premature contractions.

A third way to unblock your passageways is by pushing upwards on the point that is below your cheekbone. When you look ahead, it will also be in line with your pupil. This will help to relieve the pressure behind your eyes too.

Help Your Sinus Headaches

You can apply pressure onto your forehead just above your eyebrow and this will help to relieve the pressure that you will feel behind your eyes due to the pressure in your sinuses. This is commonly referred to as a sinus headache and can be tricky to get rid of.

Unblock Your Nose

You can press on the outer of your nose with your index fingers to help with clearing a blocked or running nose. This will help to decrease the inflammation and open the passageways. You will need to do this for around five breaths so that you feel the benefits.

Apply Pressure to the Feet

Similar to applying pressure to the web in the hand, you can apply pressure to the point between your big and second toe. This will help with gaining relief from your sinus headache and from any symptoms that you are experiencing from an allergy.

Help Shiatsu Work

While you are performing your Shiatsu, you can help it by draining the fluid in your sinuses. This is not as painful as it sounds. The easiest way to do this is by using steam and a bath will actually help with your sinus symptoms.

You can put a few drops of menthol or oils into the water and breathe naturally to take in all of the benefits. This is a very relaxing way to go through all the steps of Shiatsu and not worry about someone walking in and asking what you are doing.

You will also be able to work away the stress of the day, which will help your health.

Caffeine

While caffeine is often blamed for negative health effects, it has been associated with a lower rate of Parkinson’s disease. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease is higher among people who did not drink coffee than it was among people who drank three cups (28 ounces) of caffeinated coffee daily.

The findings were supported by other researchers who found that coffee drinkers developed Parkinson’s disease eight years later than people who didn’t drink coffee. This hasn’t been true for Michael or me; we’re both java hounds.

Now, these studies probably don’t mean that caffeine—or some other ingredient in coffee—protects the brain from the ravages of Parkinson’s disease.

If you don’t drink coffee, it probably doesn’t make sense to brew a cup and try to pick up the habit. In addition, people who drink more than three or four cups daily often experience more severe tremor, nausea, and greater problems with insomnia. If you like to wake up to a morning cup of Java, keep things in moderation, relax, and enjoy.

Nicotine

Cigarette smoking is harmful to your health. It contributes to heart disease, stroke, hypertension, lung cancer, and other cancers and health problems.

Ironically, however, people who smoke cigarettes have lower rates of Parkinson’s disease than those who don’t smoke. For reasons that are not well understood, nicotine appears to protect the dopamine-producing cells in the brain.

In laboratory research, nicotine has been shown to protect the brains of rats from cell death caused by exposure to the toxin MPTP. In human studies involving the nicotine patch, participants wearing the patch showed no improvement in motor symptoms compared to people with PD who did not wear the patch. The interaction between nicotine and Parkinson’s disease remains under investigation.

I am a smoker—and I have been since before my PD was diagnosed—but I try to justify this vice by calling it a treatment for my PD. My doctor reminds me that this doesn’t make sense; the health hazards far outweigh any possible benefits. Do as I say, not as I do: don’t smoke.

“I am a smoker,” said Marian, 60. “I could quit, but I find that my down time is more pronounced and my symptoms are more exaggerated when I don’t smoke. Even my doctor jokes that I have the only disease that smoking is good for, but I know he’s kidding. I don’t want to live with Parkinson’s only to die of lung cancer.”

Diet and Nutrition

The relationship between diet and nutrition and Parkinson’s disease remains controversial. Nothing you may eat—or fail to eat— has been definitively linked to PD, but some studies do suggest that diet may help to treat or prevent some cases of the disease. Specifically, diets rich in antioxidants—such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene—may help to reduce the levels of free radicals in the body, reducing the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

Clearly, Parkinson’s disease is a multifaceted disease caused by a complex interaction of factors. For this reason, it is very difficult to identify who might be vulnerable to Parkinson’s disease. It can also be very difficult to diagnose the disease, especially among people with young-onset Parkinson’s disease.

Carcinoma is also referred to as malignant tumor. It is the uncontrolled growth of deformed cells –epithelial cells in the body. Considering the functions of epithelial cells, which include secretion, absorption, protection and even trans-cellular transport.

We find many shortcomings as far as the functioning of human organs is concerned, that any attack on the epithelial cells has great repercussions or causes since, from the general findings of the importance of epithelial cells and their central functions it’s notable that it leads to great suffering of the victims.

On spreading infection case the cancerous cells also attack the neighboring tissues like the kidney, skin and ovary.

Spreading of Carcinoma

With this kind of spread we find ourselves facing numerous challenges as the cancerous cells start to cause varied deformations which lead to different kinds or forms of cancer.

The range varies with the degree of infection and spread to other parts of the same organ or different organs surrounding the primary cell – primary cell is the area of infection of the cancerous cells. The cause of cancer is a scientific puzzle as science has only advance proven that majorly the resultant feature is deformed cells.

However, most postulate some forms of cancer to be caused by for example skin cancer – is as a result of ultraviolet radiation which kills or attacks the skin cells or endothermic cells causing malformations.

Complicated Cancer with Carcinoma

Currently in the world a great population of persons have one or another form of cancer, these medics attribute to the unhealthy eating habits wh1ich some postulate that stresses on bio-genetic products as opposed to the natural foods.

this deviations they elaborate that it leads us to quick starting a process of slow but sure steps to deformation of our body cells as a result we start experiencing early signs or warnings of possible diagnosis.

This some medical experts say is due to people not watching how and what they eat. As a result they find themselves eating carcinogenic foodstuffs which without knowing slowly plunges them in a list of possible cancer patients.

However, despite this most governments acting from the medical statistics records which as it stands in the world show that cancer is an upcoming future lead killer medical condition.

Fight against Carcinoma

Governments were realigning their investments in research so as to find a remedy to this condition. United States is currently the most advanced in dealing with cancer for example treatment, suppression and even prevention.

This has geared most countries towards development of cancer centers where patients are attended to by experienced medics as far as cancer is concerned.

Treatment of cancer is varied or varies depending on the form of cancer one has and also the stage and degree of infection of the organs or organ, some of the available treatments include surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy and radiation.

The treatment is also relative since there are a lot of costs involved so people was much as they want cancer healed they tend to go for pocket friendly options, the best remedy however is to watch your health.

Though it comes in many different forms or traditions, meditation basically involves focusing your complete attention on one thing at a time. If you haven’t tried it, meditation can feel strange at first.

The mind tends to wander, and it can be a real challenge to maintain concentration when faced with a barrage of distracting thoughts. Did I take my meds? Will I be able to make it to the graduation on Saturday?

Meditation relieves stress because it is impossible to feel tense or angry when your mind is focused somewhere else. You can’t experience negative thoughts—or the physiological responses to those thoughts—if your mind is tuned in to a neutral stimulus.

Studies have long supported the idea that meditation promotes relaxation. Research in 1968 at Harvard Medical School found that when people practiced transcendental meditation (TM; a type of mantra meditation), they showed physiological signs of deep relaxation.

Their heart rate and breathing slowed, their oxygen consumption dropped by 20 percent, their blood lactate levels dropped, their skin resistance to electrical current increased, and their brainwave patterns showed greater alpha-wave activity (the frequency associated with a state of deep relaxation).

More recent research has found that regular meditation can have notable effects on blood pressure, anxiety, chronic pain, body tension, and immune response and can clinically reduce Cortisol levels, a measure of the body’s stress level.

Researchers have also shown, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), that meditation can activate certain structures in the brain that control the autonomic nervous system, a system that can become dysfunctional in some PD patients.

To experience the relaxing benefits of meditation, find a quiet place where you are not apt to be interrupted. Sit in a firm chair with your back as straight as possible, or lie down flat on your back on the ground. Then try one of the three basic types of meditation.

- Mantra meditation involves repeating—either aloud or silently— a word, a syllable, or a group of words each time you breathe out. I use prayer as my mantra. I find that “when I take the time to be still and pray, it can ease many of my symptoms, even on the most horrid of days.

- Gazing meditation involves focusing both your attention and your gaze on an object such as a candle flame, a stone, or a flower. The object should be about one foot away from your face. Gaze at it rather than stare, keeping your eyes relaxed. Don’t try to think about the object in words, just look at it without judgment.

- Breathing meditation involves focusing on the rise and fall of your breath. Draw a deep breath, focusing on the inhalation, the pause before you exhale, the exhalation, and the pause before you inhale. Each time you complete a breath and exhale, count 1 through 4, then start over with 1 when you exhale. The counting helps clear your mind of other thoughts.

No matter which type of meditation you choose, begin your session with a few minutes of deep breathing. When random thoughts enter your mind during your meditation time (as they almost certainly will), don’t become anxious; just accept the thoughts and let them pass through your mind without notice or response. Start by meditating for 5 to 10 minutes once or twice a day, then work up to 15 to 20 minutes.

Many people suffer from sinus problems, usually due to allergies or the changes in the season. Your sinuses are structures in your head that help to hold up your head and face. They are usually empty and very balloon-like.

You can often feel run down, tired and full of cold when you are suffering from sinus congestion, even if it is not due to infection.

There are many ways that you can help sinus congestion, one of the ways is flushing your sinuses. This can be done with a saline irrigation method in a few easy steps.

What Your Need For Sinus Irrigation

You can buy irrigation kits that are already made up but if you are looking for a home method then you will need the following ingredients.

A blub syringe that is for your nasal, salt, baking soda and some warm water – this will need to be either tap or distilled water. You will also need tissues for afterwards, since you will be draining a lot of liquid from your nose.

Mix the Solution

You will need to start by mixing the saline solution. Mix a quarter teaspoon of salt and baking soda in with eight ounces of the water. You should boil the water first, so that you remove any bacteria, and then let it cool. You want it at a luke warm temperature so that you do not burn yourself. Once the water has cooled, then add the salt and the baking soda.

The Amount of Solution to Use

You will need to use between eight and 16 ounces of the solution for each nostril, so you may need to make up more. You will also need to do this twice a day. You should always consult your doctor to ensure that this is safe for you and to get any medical advice. Remember that this is only advisor.

Start the Nasal Irrigation

You will need to lean over your sink because it will get very messy. Start by turning your head so that your left nostril is closest to the sink bottom and then squirt some of the solution in your right nostril.

You should do this slowly and gently so that you do not cause yourself any excess pain or discomfort. The water will travel into your left nostril and drain through.

You should always ensure that you have used enough pressure so that the solution drains out and does not clog up your nose.

Once you have done that, blow your nose gently and then repeat on the left nostril. You should always ensure that you blow your nose gently and through both nostrils to help with pressure and so that you do not cause your nose to bleed.

Purchase Pre-Made Saline Kits

As stated above, you can purchase pre-made saline kits that comes with a specially made plastic bottle. These will work just as well to flush out your sinuses but can be more expensive than the general homemade versions. Whichever type you choose, you should always make a fresh load of solution each day and clean your syringe thoroughly.

When it comes to finding out that your kidneys are being to fail, it is important to receive treatment so that you can go back to being healthy and happy.

There are a number of different treatments when it comes to kidney disease but not all are suitable for everybody and each have their own benefits and downsides. It is important to know the details before you jump into any decision.

The Benefits of Hemodialysis for Kidney Disease

Hemodialysis is used to filter and clean out your blood by using a machine that is able to clear the toxins and wastes from your bloodstream, however this is only temporary.

You are able to opt to do the treatment at home or in a center. There are many facilities all around the United States that have fully trained professionals at all times.

By going in a center, you are able to talk to other patients, who may be able to offer you some pointers or vice versa. If you choose to do it at home, you can keep your independence by having control over your treatment – although this still must be done to doctor’s orders.

You do not need a lot of space for the equipment anymore and you are still able to continue your normal day with work, unlike with in centers, you can even take the machines to work with you.

The Downsides to Hemodialysis for Kidney Disease

When it comes to going to a center, you will need to work by their timetables, which can affect your social plans as well as your working hours. There are more medications that you will need to take and all these will need to be paid for. You will need to stick to a strict diet while also travel to the centers.

However, at home treatment still has negatives. The main one is that you need to have a partner with you and that may be stressful on your family. You will need to learn how to use all the equipment, which may take time and mean time off work.

The Benefits of Peritoneal Dialysis for Kidney Disease

This is another option to remove waste from your body and like the first, there are three options that you can choose from. Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), Continuous Cycle-assisted Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD) or a mixture of both.

If you opt for CAPD you are able to do this on your own, which means less stress on your family and you do not need a machine. There is no need to travel to a center and it can be done wherever you need, so you can keep your normal working pattern.

If you are opting for CCPD, you are able to do this at night rather than disrupt your daily life.

The Disadvantages of Peritoneal Dialysis for Kidney Disease

CAPD can cause a disruption to your daily life since you will need to do this during the day and it must be done seven days a week. The CCPD needs a machine, which can cause problems when going away, and your nightly movement will be limited due to being connected to a machine.

Kidney Transplant to Cure Kidney Disease

It is important to note that dialysis is not a cure for your disease; it is just a way to help you cope with the buildup of waste in your system. The only cure is to opt for a kidney transplant. This is when a healthy kidney is put in place of your current damaged ones but it does require major surgery under general anesthetic, which some people are not suitable for. You will not need dialysis once you have had the transplant but you could be waiting years for a donor kidney and then your body may reject it.

Women who are prone to gestational diabetes

Up to now, it is not clear why some women may develop gestational diabetes while others do not. However, it has been found out that there are some women who are at risk more than others are.

The women who have high chances of developing gestational diabetes. Women who have the history of gestational diabetes in the family, for example if a sister, a mother or a grandmother developed it during pregnancy.

If the woman has given birth to overweight child in the past. If the woman herself is obese or overweight. If she suffers from PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).

The area where people originated also has been found to contribute to the risk of a woman in developing the diabetes. The women who are at risk are the women from South Asia, middle east and black Caribbean women.

When the tests should be conducted

Gestational diabetes is identified by using glucose tolerance test, taken during the morning before the woman takes anything. The doctors give the woman glucose solution and they will monitor how the body deals with glucose on intervals.

If you have chances of developing gestational pregnancy, you will be tested during the 24th and 28th week. If you have developed gestational diabetes in your past pregnancy, you will be tested on the 18th week.

If the first test is normal, you will be tested again on the 24th week. If you are found with gestational diabetes, you will be referred to doctors and nurses who have experience of taking care of women who are suffering from gestational diabetes.

Measures to prevent gestational diabetes

If you are pregnant there are simple things that you can do which can reduce your risks of developing gestational diabetes. If you watch what you eat and you do exercise regularly, you will be lowering the problem of diabetes. If you do not know what to eat, you can visit a dietitian or a doctor to give you some advice.

You have to make sure that you eat much of whole meal bread, brown rice, pasta, beans lentils, and oats. These foods are also recommended if you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes because they are low glycemic food and they help in balancing sugar levels.

The diet also has to include oil fishy, much of fruits and vegetables. If you are craving for chocolate or crisps, you have to go for those that have low level in salt, sugar and fat. Besides of good diet, you have also to exercise regularly such as walking or bicycling for 30 minutes each day.

Management of gestational blood sugar

If you are suffering from gestational blood sugar, you will have to test yourself each day to see if the levels are lowering. If you are not able to go to see the doctors every day, you will be shown on how to do it.

Managing gestational diabetes by taking medicines

If exercising and dieting cannot lower your glucose level, then you will be given insulin tablets or injections. You can be asked to take the medicines regularly or only if there is a need to take them. The doctor will be able to give you all required information.

This is also known as malignant hematoma; it is the cancer that affects the liver in the human body. This is mostly as a result of infection of hepatide virus which can be either hepatitis B or C or even cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is majorly caused by alcoholism.

The treatment depends on the stage of infection and also the size of the tumor. The tumor can for instance be removed through surgery but in the circumstance that the removal fails, it is fatal as it results to death within six months.

This however can be caused by medics lacking necessary expertise to deal with the tumor and also facilities.

The Causes of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

There are a number of causes of this condition and these includes; alcoholism, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, aflotoxins, cirrhosis of the liver, hemachromatosis and type diabetes. When hepatocellular adenomas grow to size 6-8cm, they become cancerous and consequently becomes risk to hepatocellular carcinoma. This condition however, mostly affects the adults.

Symptoms of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

The symptoms of this condition include jaundice- yellowish pigmentation of the skin, bloating of ascites, easy bruising from blood clotting abnormalities, loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss, abdominal pains, and nausea- feeling of dizziness, emesis and fatigue.

Hepatocellular carcinoma majorly develops when there is mutation to the cellular machinery and this makes the cells to replicate at a higher rate and consequently resulting in the cell apoptosis which consider the role of hepatitis B in advancing the spread of cancerous cells.

We find that it plays a very big role in the acute cases so far. Chronic infection of hepatitis B or C aids in the development of this condition and this is done repeatedly causing the body’s immune system to attack the liver cells, some of which are affected.

It worsens when mistakes are made leading to carcinogenic. This condition can be treated by radio therapy, systematic chemotherapy and topical chemotherapy.

The Review of Adenocarcinoma

There is also adenocarcinoma which is basically the cancer of an epithelium; it majorly originates from the glandular tissue. The study of the cells of glandular can help us to determine whether the tumor is an adenocarcinoma or even some other form of cancer, and therefore the major distinctive feature here is the glandular tissue whether or not they are infected.

There are other forms of adenocarcinoma for instance we have; adenocarcinoma of the lungs, adenocarcinoma of the colon and adenocarcinoma of the ovary. In each case it has been scientifically established that their modes of diagnosis is also different, for example in some cases of the adenocarcinoma, a preliminary diagnosis is carried out by a pathologist.

This is the most difficult form of cancer in terms of diagnosis and also treatment. Though almost all forms of cancer are treated by radiation but in this case there is no clear indication of the line of treatment.

In most cases it is advisable that the medical practitioner uses the originating tissue to determine the mode of diagnosis. It can also arise from the many tissues in the body due to ambiguous nature of the glands within the body. These conditions are hard to tell since all need specialized attention to tell them apart.

The brain consumes about 20 percent of the oxygen in the body, and with that high level of oxygen consumption evidence shows an increase in the number of free radicals in the brain.

The problem becomes worse when the number of free radicals is further increased by the toxic burden of household chemicals, pesticides, and other toxic exposures.

Antioxidants—whether consumed as food or nutritional supplements—can help the body fight free-radical damage and stabilize the reactive oxygen molecules by freely donating extra electrons. Antioxidants include vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium, among others.

Vitamin C

One-fourth of all Americans do not get even the minimum amount of vitamin C—60 milligrams—that cells need to perform basic biological functions. In the body, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) helps with tissue and collagen growth, wound healing, adrenal gland function, and healthy gums, in addition to serving as a powerful antioxidant.

Studies have found plasma levels of vitamin C to be significantly lower in people with Parkinson’s disease, compared to healthy controls.

Dosage: Take 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily in divided doses (half in the morning, half at night), or follow package directions.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps improve circulation, promotes healthy blood clotting, lowers blood pressure, helps prevent cataracts, and repairs damaged tissue. It may also play a role in preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease. Studies have found the risk of PD significantly reduced among men and women who consumed moderate levels of vitamin E from food, rather than supplements.

PD patients who have high blood pressure or who are on an anticoagulant (blood thinner) such as Coumadin (warfarin) should not take vitamin E supplements without a doctor’s approval.

Dosage: Take 400IU of vitamin E daily, or follow package directions.

Selenium

Selenium is a powerful antioxidant, especially when combined with vitamin E. In the body, this trace element helps form the antioxidant selenium-glutathione peroxidase. It is also needed for pancreatic function, tissue elasticity, and red blood cell metabolism.

Studies have shown that people with chronic illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease may have low levels of selenium. For best results, take selenomethionine, rather than sodium selenite or sodium selenate.

Dosage: Take 100 micrograms of selenium daily, or follow product directions.

When you feel congested, it is usually due to your sinuses becoming inflamed. Your sinuses are balloon shaped and are within your head. They are usually empty and are used to hold up the head’s structure.

However, at times these balloons can fill and it often leads to discomfort and headaches. This is not always due to an infection and can also be due to hay fever, allergic reactions or just simply changes to airborne substances.

Use Steam to Help Your Sinuses

The best way to battle your congested sinuses is through the use of steam, especially steam with a mixture of menthol. You can fill a bowl with some hot water and sit over it, commonly with a towel over your head.

You can breathe normally and it will help the sinuses become decongested in a matter of minutes. You can also do this in a hot shower or bath. You bath is the perfect place to be able to unwind at the same time.

If you have a warm cloth, you can place that over your sinuses to offer some relief. You should never blow your nose too hard because it can lead to other problems within your sinuses and often cause your nose to start bleeding.

Look for Sinus Irrigation Kits

There are a number of irrigation kits that can be used to help with decongestant your sinuses or you can make your own. When buying a kit, you should always follow all the instructions so that you are successful. You should always do this gently so that you do not cause yourself any pain or discomfort.

Try Home Remedies or Nasal Sprays

There are a number of home remedies that you can buy from your local health store. The best one that has been used for decades is the Neti Pot. This looks like a small tea pot and you should, again, follow all the instructions carefully. You can also buy over the counter nasal sprays to help with discomfort but they are very addictive so you should not use them over a long period of time.

See Your Doctor

No matter what method you try to help clear your sinuses, you should also talk to your doctor. This is extremely important so that you can ensure that your sinus congestion is not due to an infection. If you notice that the discharge from your nose is not white then this is a clear sign that it is an infection. Talking to your doctor will give you a clear indication of how serious it is and whether there is any medication that you can take to help you.

Wash Your Hands

When you go through the irrigation techniques, you should always wash your hands both before and after doing it. It does not matter whether you are using a home remedy or whether you are using a manufactured one. Washing your hands will help prevent contamination and any extra infections that you may pick up while your body is already weak.

For those who are looking for a permanent way of curing their kidney failure, a transplant may be the only option. This can take months or years to finally get a kidney that is suitable for you and there may be complications afterwards, such as rejecting the transplant or infections. You only need one kidney transplants, since it will be strong enough to do the same work of two.

Kidney Transplant to Cure Kidney Disease

A surgeon will place a new kidney inside your abdomen and then connect the arteries and veins. There is no need to remove your damaged kidneys and the blood flow will be redirected into the new kidney to help your body work normally again.

It can take up to a few weeks for the kidney to work properly, but this is perfectly normal. The only time that your own kidneys will be removed is if they have caused an infection or you have high blood pressure because of them.

Preparing for a Kidney Transplant

There are many steps before you can receive a transplant and the process is not for everybody. You need to seriously talk with your doctor about your options.

You can sometimes gain a transplant from a friend or family member, since people can live with only one kidney. There are a number of factor that need to match to be able to use a kidney and if none of your prospective donors match, you will be placed on a waiting list.

The factors that need to match are your blood type, which is the most important of all three, your human leukocyte antigens and cross-matching antigens.

The first set of antigens do not need to be a complete match, as long as your blood types are. The second set of antigens are tested through a small blood sample. If there is no reaction then the antigens are a good match.

Timing for Kidney Transplants

If you have been given a kidney by a volunteer then your surgery can be planned as soon as possible.

However, it can take several years to find a matching donor if you are on the list since there are just not enough deceased donors as there are people who need the transplant.

The surgery itself takes around three or four hours and you will need to stay in the hospital afterwards for about a week. After that, you will need regular checkups.

Complications with Transplant Curing Kidney Disease

No matter how much the match between you and the donor are, there are still possibilities that you will reject the new kidney. This is usually due to not taking your medication as you were supposed to. This medication is meant to help stop your immune system from seeing the new kidney as a threat and start attacking it.

These medications will need to be taken the whole time that you have the new kidney and it is functioning. When this happens, you will need to go back on dialysis.

You are more likely not to reject the kidney if it has come from a living relative because both of your make-ups are very similar. Also, around 85 percent of transplants from donors who are deceased still work a year after the surgery.

Kidney Transplant Diet

Your diet will not be as strict as it is when on dialysis but you will still need to cut back on some food and ensure that others are eaten more. Higher protein food is still the best for you, which you can get in meats, chicken and fish.

You will need to take medication, which means that you may need to start counting your calories since the medication will cause weight gain. You may also need to cut down on the amount of salt that you easy because the medication could also cause high blood pressure, which salt intake can control.

There are many factors that can contribute to the woman risks of developing the gestational diabetes, the risks among other are the women who are obese, the women who become pregnant after 35 years old.

The women who give birth to the babies who are overweight and the women who have history of diabetes in their family. Ethical factors also can contribute to the woman tolerance of diabetes or can increase their chances of suffering gestational diabetes.

Besides of the above risks, women who smoke or who suffered polycystic ovarian increase their risks of suffering gestational diabetes.

Since at least 40 to 60 percent women do not have any risk factor, the health care may choose to screen all pregnant women. Another reason of screening all women is that sometime women do not have any symptoms that means and they may not be aware that they are suffering gestational diabetes.

The common symptoms that women show when they suffer gestational pregnancy are: the thirst, and urination increases, the woman may feel fatigue, vomiting, and nausea, the yeast infection and bladder infection can also increase. Sometime the woman may suffer a blurred vision.

The reasons for gestational diabetes are yet to be known

The reasons behind developing gestational diabetes are yet to be known. It is only believed that some pregnancy hormones can interfere with insulin action and increase the insulin resistance.

If there is insulin resistance, it also means that the glucose will not enter the blood system properly and it will be increased in the blood system.

Even if it is not yet clear why some people can increase the glucose in their blood than others, however it has been found out that gene mutation or obesity and other reasons that lead the type 2 diabetes.

The effects of gestational diabetes on the unborn baby

The gestational diabetes can also expose the child on a high level of glucose since the glucose pass through the placenta barrier. Since the insulin itself cannot cross placenta, the baby cannot find enough insulin to fight off the glucose increasing the risk of abnormal growth and large body.

After the birth, the high level of glucose around the baby disappears, but because the body mechanism has already developed much insulin to fight off the glucose, the child may suffer low level of glucose in his body.

Tests used to detect gestational diabetes

There is no single test that can detect the high level of glucose in serum or in plasma. A screen test is followed up by diagnostic test. After screen testing, there should be also diagnostic testing. An advance test can be conducted to women who are at risk when they visit the hospital for antenatal care.

The woman can be tested using fasting glucose test, postprandial test and random glucose level test. People have different opinions about the test that are used for screening and for diagnosing. This because population risks factors differ and the cost effectiveness of the tests.

Some doctors may wait until the woman reach 24 weeks, however if the woman is at risk the test may be taken earlier. The tests are no challenge blood level glucose tests, screening glucose level challenge test and oral glucose tolerance.

This is a type of breast cancer that can occur to all persons of all ages. This condition is referred to as inflammatory as a result of its frequented with symptoms that resembles an inflammation. It has varied signs and symptoms, some of these signs have undetectable tumors hence hard to detect by sophisticated equipments available in the cancer centers.

Symptoms of Inflammatory Cancer

The notable signs of this condition include rapid swelling sometimes associated by skin changes and nipple retraction, rapid increase in breast size, reddening, persistent itching, and skin hot to touch.

Other symptoms include; pain in breast, skin changes, sudden swelling of breast, itching of the breast, swelling of limp nodes under the arm or in the neck, unusual warmth of the affected breast, breast is harder or firmer, some other symptoms though not necessarily experienced in all cases may include; swelling of the arm, breast decreasing instead of increasing and also a lump may grow rapidly.

Inflammatory breast cancer shows low levels of estrogen and progesterone. The most reliable diagnosis includes biopsy, mammography or ultrasound. This condition is also known to respond to antibiotics, progesterone and reaction to other medication and even hormones.

Infection Stages of Inflammatory Cancer

The diagnosis of this type of cancer depends on the stage of infection. There are three stages of infection these include; firstly, stage IIIA -which indicates that only one breast is affected, secondly, stage IIIB – this shows that the whole breast is affected, in addition it also gives an indicator that spread is taking place and that the cancer might be spreading to areas like the chest wall, skin and even the chest muscle.

Finally, there is stage IV – this indicates that the spread of the cancerous cells has taken root to other organs these organs include; bones, lungs, liver, brain and lymph nodes.

In the treatment various methods are used these include multi-nudal therapy which includes chemotherapy with a combination of radiation therapy, hormonal therapy where necessary. Also it is good to note that surgery may be required.

Cure of Inflammatory Cancer

Estrogen antagonist inhibition improves outcome of ER positive cancer. It is also good to note that surgery is only and rarely performed because of inflammatory breast cancer is considered a systematic cancer. This condition is normally characterized by the presence of cancer cells in the sub dermal lymphatic or in the skin biopsy.

Inflammatory breast cancer is a very common condition in young women and does require due attention to cure it, this is necessary as if assumed it can lead to one or a woman losing one or both breasts which has very consequential implications mostly in relation to child birth or motherhood.

There are complications that do arise from treatment of this kind of cancer, these complications include swelling of the arm this happens after surgery , also on surgery; reconstruction of breast may be an option for healthy women after undergoing mastectomy. Consequently for patients who smoke or even suffer from a diabetic condition do suffer from some resultant complications.

By the time Doris had had Parkinson’s disease for 15 years, she needed help with almost all of her daily activities. She was only in her midfifties but she couldn’t walk from the bathroom to the bed without assistance; she couldn’t dress herself or prepare her meals. Everything changed when she read that changing her diet and taking nutritional supplements could prevent her symptoms.

At that point in her life, Doris felt she had nothing to lose by changing her lifestyle:

I ate food rich in the amino acid GABA (gamma-amino-butyric acid) and I took a slew of supplements—B vitamins, GABA, alpha-lipoic acid, and lots of others. I took the supplements for about three months, but I saw results very quickly.

Within a few weeks, I almost felt normal. As I got better, I was able to exercise again. When I started, I couldn’t swing my arms when I walked, if I could walk at all.

When my motor skills came back to me, I started walking, biking, playing racquetball, and working out with weights at the gym. I got my health back.

I remember sitting in my support group and seeing the other people who were struggling, and I felt completely normal. It’s obvious that for me nutrition is very important. The better I followed the program, the better I felt. I’ve proven that for myself.

I stayed with it for about a year, but I reached the point that I felt so normal that I got away from my good habits. I got a little cocky, I think. I felt so good that I thought I could eat some key lime pie here, some pizza there.

Before long I was eating the same non-nutritious foods I had been, and I gave up on the supplements. It doesn’t make any sense that I went off the program when I started to feel good, but that’s what happened—and then my Parkinson’s came back.

I went back on the diet and supplements and I felt better within two weeks. I think I’ve learned my lesson—/ hope I’ve learned my lesson.

While I haven’t had the disease-transforming experience that Doris had, I do believe nutritional supplements and diet can strengthen the body and minimize Parkinson’s symptoms. I take a handful of supplements every day, but frankly, I cannot afford to pay for a wide range of over-the-counter products as well as our prescription medications. (Some supplements are available by prescription—and covered by insurance—but the cost of the vast majority will not be reimbursed.)

In my experience, most doctors dismiss nutrition and supplements as unimportant. I believe that each of us should do all we can to confront our Parkinson’s with every tool we have. If adding certain foods to our diets or nutrients to our list of daily vitamins helps control our PD, we should definitely be open to trying it. Clearly, there are serious limitations to the prescription medications available for PD; if natural therapies work, I completely support their use.

One word of caution: be sure to tell your doctor about any supplements you take or special changes you make to your diet. At least 40 percent of PD patients use some alternative therapies—including vitamins, herbs, massage, and acupuncture—but more than half do not tell their physicians about these treatments. In some cases, there can be drug interactions or side effects from non-prescription medications.

A surgeon operating on the brain of a Parkinson’s patient is like an electrician correcting a short in the wiring of your home. In a person with PD, there is a problem with the electrical pathway in the final circuit from the thalamus to the motor cortex in the brain.

The neurosurgeon can fix this problem in one of two basic ways: by electrically stimulating the circuit (DBS) or by rewiring the circuit using a technique known as lesion (cutting a small hole in the brain, creating what can be thought of as a minor stroke).

Both types of surgery have been found to improve motor function in people with advanced PD or in those who no longer respond well to medication.

In the late 1990s, deep brain stimulation revolutionized the surgical treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The surgery involves inserting a thin wire and electrodes into the brain, linking the wire to a re¬mote battery, and stimulating the brain at a high frequency (100 to 180 hertz).

The electrodes are positioned in the brain; the wires run under the skin along the skull and down the neck, eventually cross¬ing over to a pacemaker-sized battery pack in the chest wall. All of the wires remain under the skin. The device can be programmed by holding a computer over the skin near the pulse generator. The pro¬cedure was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease in 1997.

DBS will not reverse all symptoms. Rather, DBS is said to “turn back the clock” by five to seven years. In other words, it does not eliminate all Parkinson’s symptoms, but rather it tends to improve symptoms to the level they were a half decade before. It’s not a perfect fix, but it is a significant improvement for most people.

“The surgery didn’t help with my speech or swallowing problems,” said Jeremy, 31. “I still need extra water when I take my pills, and there are times I still have trouble with the words I need to find. But I’m much better, and it has reduced my medication by 60 percent.”

The physical changes associated with DBS are determined by the positioning of the electrodes.

- DBS of the subthalamic nucleus offers about an 80 percent reduction in tremor, as well as a 65 percent reduction in rigidity, a 51 percent reduction in bradykinesia, and an 80 to 90 percent reduction in dyskinesia. It can be done on one or both sides of the brain. After the surgery, many patients can reduce their daily dose of Parkinson’s medications by 30 to 50 percent.

- DBS of the thalamus reduces tremor in about 92 percent of Parkinson’s patients. Unfortunately, this type of DBS does not significantly improve rigidity and bradykinesia, making it an effective treatment only in people with tremor-predominant PD.

At this point there isn’t enough long-term data to know how lasting the benefits of this surgery may be, but many people who have had DBS continue to experience benefits more than 10 years later. Remember, Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease; your condition will continue to deteriorate even if you have surgery.

In most cases, DBS is performed when the patient is awake. Typically, a person does not take medication for at least a day before surgery, so that the doctors can accurately determine how the exact placement of the probes affects movement.
The mortality rate for DBS is extremely low; there has been only one reported death in North America associated with the procedure.

Approximately 4 percent of patients experience non-life-threatening infections. About 2 percent of patients experience serious permanent side effects, including difficulty opening eyelids, weakness, and numbness; additional temporary complications include seizures, confusion, infection, facial numbness, and dyskinesia.

In addition, the system requires maintenance; the electrodes must be programmed and tested on a regular basis, and the battery pack inserted under the skin in the chest wall must be changed every two to five years.

In some cases, the surgery must be repeated because the electrodes need to be repositioned or replaced. That’s what happened to Kellie.

“The doctors don’t know why, but my electrodes moved a bit,” Kellie said. “I needed to have another surgery; my husband calls it a warranty job.” At this point, Kellie reports that her left hand is twisted and she can’t bend her fingers. Sometimes she feels her left side pulling and her toes curling under. “It’s a glitch,” she said, “the doctors will take care of it.”

In early October 2006 Kellie’s surgeons repositioned the two leads that had fallen out of position. In addition, they added two more leads in Kellie’s brain. Having four leads will enhance the doc¬tors’ ability to fine-tune the frequencies in Kellie’s system.

Michael and I visited Kellie a few weeks after the second surgery. She was a different person than we had seen before; she was smil¬ing from ear to ear, active, and vibrant. She had no tremors and few signs of the debilitating dystonia that had plagued her before her DBS surgery. I watched with tears of joy when she picked up 2-year-old Noah and gave him a big bear hug.

Based on such anecdotes, it is my impression that the quality of DBS is much better than it used to be. I knew some people who had DBS as little as five years ago who spoke in a monotone after the surgery. They were often depressed and moved in a zombie-like fashion.

I think the procedure has been improved; I don’t see those symptoms anymore in patients who have undergone DBS surgery recently. Kellie had no trouble talking; in fact, her voice was more animated than it had been before surgery. Her movements were fluid and her energy level was incredible.

Most of the people I know who have had the surgery have had good results; in some cases, you wouldn’t know they had Parkinson’s at all.

We are beginning the journey toward DBS for Michael. Michael has had PD for 11 years now, and he’s at a point where his on time is short-lived and his off time grows more frequent. For several months we have been preparing ourselves and our families for this exciting procedure. After spending time with Kellie, Michael has become convinced that DBS surgery is the right next step for him.
